The Biggest Bra Myths, Busted

There are many bra myths out there, from the importance of cup size to how often you need a bra fitting, and the list goes on. We consulted our resident bra expert, Wacoal and b.tempt’d Head of Design, Miryha Fantegrossi, to spread some truth so you don’t fall victim to the 5 most common bra mistakes that come from believing inaccurate industry myths.

Bra Myth:

Bra straps are responsible for providing all the support.

BUSTED! “70% of the support your bra provides actually comes from the band,” Fantegrossi explains. This is why it is so important that the band fits properly. If it’s too loose, your bra will ride up, and your cups (and what’s inside them!) will sink down, and vice versa. Fantegrossi describes this as the “see-saw-effect”- a helpful visual to help understand why the band of your bra is such a key support factor.

Bra Myth:

Your bra size stays the same through all stages of life.

BUSTED! As your body evolves, it makes sense that your bra size will too. “A shift of 7 pounds, in either direction, will generally affect bra size,” Fantegrossi explains. There are other factors too, including pregnancy, menopause, aging and fitness regimens. The size you are today may not be the size you are 6 months or a year from today, so be sure to download the mybraFit™ app (available in the App Store for iOS and Android) so you can easily and accurately keep tabs on your size in the comfort of your own home, whenever it’s most convenient.

Bra Myth:

You must wash your bra after every wear.

BUSTED! “Not necessarily! “says Fantegrossi. While you need to take into account the climate and conditions in which you are wearing the bra, for the most part, a woman can typically wear her bra several times before washing it. Washing your bra refreshes it and can revive the shape, letting the fabric recover and breathe, so it fits and looks better.

Bra Myth:

Only women with large breasts need to wear bras.

BUSTED! “It’s part of self-care,” Fantegrossi says about wearing a bra regardless of breast size. “Younger women with smaller breasts may feel like they don’t need a bra because their breast tissue is firm and their shape is naturally perky but over time, tissue breaks down. Wearing a bra daily is preventative support now helps to retain shape later.”

Bra Myth:

You can wear the same bra every day.

BUSTED! For Fantegrossi, it all starts with the rule of 3. “When you find a bra you love for everyday wear, buy three. This way, you can have one on your body, one in your drawer, and one in the laundry so there is a bra at the ready whenever you need it.” And, even if you gravitate towards one bra style, Fantegrossi reminds us, “What you wear on top changes, so what you wear underneath needs to change too. A wardrobe of bra styles is important to support your fashion wardrobe because what you wear on top can only look as good as what you put on under it!”
